Thank you to everyone who participated both virtually and in person at our fourth JETAA Bento Workshop: Onigiri Edition on Sunday, January 28th, 2024.

This was the first year that we hosted this event as a Hybrid event by offering in-person locations both in Canada and the US and remotely over Zoom. We had 15 participants in Vancouver, BC; 16 in Anchorage, AK; and 12 who attended virtually. All 43 of us gathered, eager to learn and make onigiris.

2024 Metro Vancouver Japan Bowl

JETAABC is excited to invite high school students learning Japanese to participate in the Metro Vancouver Japan Bowl. The Japan Bowl® is a Japanese language and culture competition for high school students who are studying Japanese. The Japan-America Society of Washington DC organized and hosted the first Japan Bowl in 1992. We are grateful to Hikita-san, Watabe-san, and all attendees who joined us this past Sunday, July 30th for Edomae in Summer. This series of educational events is co-hosted by JETAABC and the Japan-Canada Chamber of Commerce.

We not only learned that thawing sashimi in the fridge is the worst method, but also took a deep dive into the world of kelp!

Recap: Asian Heritage Month Celebration on May 27, 2023

On May 27th, 2023, 7 JET alumni and 2 community members gathered at BCIT in downtown Vancouver to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. They enjoyed a sushi lunch and time to learn about Asian Canadian history, share stories and experiences, and enjoy some fun games and karaoke. This was a great opportunity to engage, connect, educate, and raise awareness in our community.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, in honour of May Asian Heritage Month, JETAABC Yomi-Kai invited emerging writer: Erica H Isomura. The hour begun with a reading of a poem that speaks to relationships with language, environment, history, and Erica’s yon-sei (fourth generation) 四世 Japanese / diasporic Cantonese identity.
