Join us for a Tohoku-style “imonikai” (芋煮会) in Steveston! What is “Imonikai” you ask? You can think of it a bit like a fall version of “o-hanami”, with families and friends gathering together to enjoy “imoni” in the outdoors.
“Imoni” is a kind of hot soup or stew made from taro, and typically includes beef, konyaku, burdock, mushrooms, and the soup base can be made of soy sauce or miso, though there are different variations depending on the region of Tohoku.
“Imonikai” are typically held on a riverbank and “imoni” is cooked from scratch in a pot over a fire pit. (Although we’ll be going with the less traditional butane burner for reasons of fire safety.)
You are welcome to bring your friends and family to experience a bit of Tohoku in Steveston, and enjoy this “imonikai” together!
