Thank you to everyone who participated both virtually and in person at our fourth JETAA Bento Workshop: Onigiri Edition on Sunday, January 28th, 2024.
This was the first year that we hosted this event as a Hybrid event by offering in-person locations both in Canada and the US and remotely over Zoom. We had 15 participants in Vancouver, BC; 16 in Anchorage, AK; and 12 who attended virtually. All 43 of us gathered, eager to learn and make onigiris.

This year’s event will be held at 1 Athletes Way in Vancouver (with the option to attend via Zoom), on Friday, January 26, 2024, 6:00 – 9:00pm. JETAABC is excited to invite high school students learning Japanese to participate in the Metro Vancouver Japan Bowl. The Japan Bowl® is a Japanese language and culture competition for high school students who are studying Japanese. The Japan-America Society of Washington DC organized and hosted the first Japan Bowl in 1992. On May 27th, 2023, 7 JET alumni and 2 community members gathered at BCIT in downtown Vancouver to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. They enjoyed a sushi lunch and time to learn about Asian Canadian history, share stories and experiences, and enjoy some fun games and karaoke. This was a great opportunity to engage, connect, educate, and raise awareness in our community.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, in honour of May Asian Heritage Month, JETAABC Yomi-Kai invited emerging writer: Erica H Isomura. The hour begun with a reading of a poem that speaks to relationships with language, environment, history, and Erica’s yon-sei (fourth generation) 四世 Japanese / diasporic Cantonese identity.
